Resolving Resolutions for Good

It’s that time of year again - the presents have been unwrapped, the tree is down, the bubbly for New Year’s Eve is poured, and you’re ready to ring in the next year AND kick start those resolutions. Isn’t that part of the tradition of New Year’s? For most Americans, making resolutions is as much part of the new year’s celebration as watching the Times Square ball drop or planting a kiss on someone at the stroke of midnight.

Resolute Facts

How many people actually do this? A lot. A 2021 survey found that 188 million Americans were planning to have some kind of New Year’s resolution(s). And of those, at least 140 million were confident that they would stay the course. However, a survey in 2019 showed that only 7% (of those polled) actually kept any of their resolutions. So, assuming that the numbers remain roughly the same (give or take 10 million), that still leaves over 100 million people failing their resolutions. Yet, every year, like clockwork, Americans make their lists.

What are the most popular resolutions? Every year, “Health/Weight Loss/Fitness” tops the list of what Americans are hoping to push themselves towards in the new year. Self-improvement and making better decisions with money are also high-value resolutions. In short, people want to be better - with their bodies, their money, and themselves. But somehow, most of these resolutions fall to the wayside before the end of the first new month. Are people just too lazy? Are the goals too high? Or maybe, is it the “resolution” process that needs to be adjusted?

It’s Goal Time

What makes goals different from resolutions? A resolution could be considered as a personal commitment or promise; a goal, on the other hand, is a target/ambition to work towards. Even the connotation of a “goal” versus a “resolution” is more promising, more active. For some, these words are interchangeable; but for many people, however, even the idea of setting a goal includes active purpose and intent.

New Year’s resolutions have become a wish list that is similar to a child’s gift list for Santa. It would be great for these things to happen, but often, there isn’t a plan created to support resolutions to ensure success. The same could be said for making a list of goals - but even the base definition of the word denotes action and focus. Business coaches and experts advocate setting goals over making resolutions since one generally requires more relative action than the other.

Get S.M.A.R.T

When setting goals, the initial “hurdle” is creating goals that are within reason and attainable while still keeping a good pace and making headway. In other words, the goals need to be S.M.A.R.T: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Wanting to lose 50 pounds in 2022 is a great goal that is also quite achievable. Wanting to lose this weight in two months is neither realistic nor safe. Overextending the goal/resolution can quickly cause a loss of momentum and motivation. Make the goal achievable, measurable, and within the set time frame.

Honing goals to be specific will help measure the success, keep the plan on track, and complete each goal/segment of the overall plan within the given timeframe. For instance, “John” wants to advance his position at work, but what is his [ultimate] desired position (and pay)? Are there steps in between that can be sub-goals as he moves forward? Are there any additional responsibilities or actions he can take to progress himself up the ladder?
