Making Your Own Caramel Macchiato

You’re in a quandary - you LOVE your morning caramel macchiato, but you don’t love the cost of this daily morning (or afternoon) treat. What do you do? Make your own!

The recipe itself isn’t too long or hard, but you have some extra “prep” steps before you get to the actual drink - steaming and frothing your milk and making the caramel sauce. It’s recommended that you use fresh caramel sauce, but not a hard necessity if you don’t have the time or care to make it. Also, you’ll need a frothing pitcher/some way to froth your milk for the foam.

A few ideas for frothing your milk (without the tools):

  • Shake the (warm) milk in a glass jar until you see bubbles.

  • Whisk the warm milk by hand or with a hand mixer.

  • Blend the warm milk in a blender at medium speed.

Let’s get to it!

Caramel Ingredients

½ cup brown sugar

2 TB butter

¼ cup half & half

Pinch of salt

To make the caramel sauce - combine all ingredients in a small saucepan/set heat to medium-low for 1 minute (until all is melted). Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to 10 minutes (stirring occasionally). Cook until thickened and remove from heat.

** Add a bit of vanilla extract for extra flavor!

Macchiato Ingredients

2 tbsp caramel sauce

1 double shot of espresso (¼ cup total)

½ cup whole milk (steamed with foam)

Step 1: Drizzle a small amount of caramel sauce into the bottom of your cup

Step 2: Brew your espresso and pour it into a cup.

Step 3: Pour warm milk over the espresso - use a spoon to ladle any extra froth into the cup.

Step 4: Drizzle caramel sauce on top of the foam & enjoy!
